On July 1, 2020, Hypnose was realized in Kuşadası, on a ten-decare field surrounding the summer house of the artist’s family. The installation consists of a 20-meter diameter spiral drawn with 100 kg of lime. The form was created intuitively, without any mathematical calculation, emerging entirely from the artist’s improvised movement.

For the artist, the drawing of the spiral functioned as a ritual—almost a form of affirmation. It represents an attempt to step out of a specific emotional state or a moment of stagnation. It is akin to negotiating with life itself: What do you ask for? What are you willing to give? Inspired by the dances of Indigenous cultures and the cyclical patterns that appear throughout the formation of the universe, the spiral embodies the desire to adapt to life’s rhythm and to align with its flow.

Lime, both as a material that easily dissolves back into nature and as a fundamental building element of the region, forms the raw substance of the work. The fact that the installation took place in Kuşadası—where the artist was born—reinforces the theme of beginning anew, reconnecting with one’s origin.

Hypnose does not invite a direct physical interaction from the viewer; rather, it visualizes, in an aesthetic manner, the individual’s conflict with life, the acceptance of its cyclical hypnotic state, and the human tendency to submit—or adapt—to that cycle.

The installation was viewed from the balconies of the buildings surrounding the site, offering a bird’s-eye perspective. This vantage point intensified the sensation of falling into the spiral, being pulled toward the ground, and entering the cycle. The project was funded through the sale of Demet Orbay’s artworks. At the end of its one-month exhibition period, the lime entirely dispersed with the wind, returning to the natural cycle—just like everything that belongs to the rhythm of life.
