Comfort Chart was completed on October 25, 2018, after three years of preparation and planning. Installed in National Park beachs, with special permission from the Kuşadası Güzelçamlı National Park, the work consists of 100 kg of red wool strings and 487 beach stones arranged across a 10-square-meter area, stretching from the shoreline toward the forest. The stones form a vertical ascent of approximately fifteen steps along the left corner of the bay.

Each beach stone was individually wrapped by hand using naturally root-dyed wool strings. The wrapping process—carried out by three people over seven days—became an act of endurance and collective labor, embedding physical time into the landscape itself.

The 100 kg of wool was hand-spun in Çukurkuyu and Bayat, and partially produced in a factory in Kütahya. The fibers were dyed using 76 kg of Rubia tinctorum, cultivated in Manisa and processed by Hazıroğlu Textile Dye Factory in Simav. The use of natural dye links the installation to deep Anatolian craft traditions while grounding the work in its regional ecology.

The concept for Comfort Chart originated during Orbay’s residency and studies at the Berlin Art Institute in 2016. The project was fully financed and realized with the support of the artist’s family.

Wild, sharp and often painful to step on, the beach stones were transformed through the act of wrapping—softened visually and conceptually into the warmth of a Turkish carpet. The work reflects on humanity’s continuous pursuit of comfort, ultimately arriving at a point where the landscape itself becomes a woven threshold.

Visitors to the National Park continue to use the beach as usual. For those who walk across Comfort Chart, the Rubia tinctorum–dyed red wool creates a distinct threshold—a red zone that offers both a tactile and symbolic sense of protection and space.
